A Trip for the Ages: A Journey to the Holy Lands

Ras el-Tin Palace in Alexandria, Egypt

If you’ve ever wished you could travel back in time, our upcoming Trip of a Lifetime in November 2022 is designed for you. This epic journey to the Holy Lands will enable you to step deep into history even as you travel in modern luxury. From start to finish, we’ve curated a trip that weaves together the region’s rich tapestry of history, religion, culture, and art to provide you with new perspectives and once-in-a-lifetime memories.

Our journey back in time will appropriately begin in Piraeus, a port city just southwest of Athens, which is also known as the birthplace of Western civilization. After a day spent taking in local archaeological wonders, including the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Acropolis, and Ancient Angora, it will be time to board the Azamara Pursuit, which will be our floating luxury home for the next 15 nights as we tour Egypt, Israel, Turkey, and Italy.

The wonders of Egypt

Alexandria, Egypt, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, will be the next stop in our journey through time. Although the ancient city lies beneath today’s bustling metropolis, history from different eras is everywhere you turn – from the Pillar of Pompey and the underwater ruins of Cleopatra’s Palace through the Citadel of Qaitbay, built to guard the harbor in the 15th century, and the stunning Ras El-Tin Palace, constructed in the 1800s. For a taste of the city’s more recent past, explore the site of the pivotal World War II Battle of El-Alamein, which includes a military museum.

Overnight, as you sleep in comfort aboard the ship, we’ll travel to our next Egyptian destination, Port Said. Here, you can opt for a leisurely day watching ships as they await entrance to the Suez Canal and strolling through the El Nasr Museum for Modern Art. Or get out and about by visiting the nearby Great Pyramid of Giza, taking a Jeep safari through the desert, or even cruising along the river Nile.

Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem

The sacred history of Israel

No matter your faith, Jerusalem will capture your imagination. We’ll spend two days in the city, giving you plenty of time to uncover the layers of history and take in the diverse culture of today.

Visit the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, in the old city of Jerusalem. Steeped in Judaism, Islamic, and Christian traditions, people journey to the wall to place written prayers in its cracks. Nearby, take in the Dome of the Rock, one of Jerusalem’s most recognizable landmarks built atop the “Foundation Stone,” which is sacred for both Muslims and Jews. Or walk the Via Dolorosa, “way of sorrows,” which Christians believe is the path Jesus walked during his crucifixion.

Our journey continues to Haifa, the third-largest city in Israel. Along with picturesque beaches and the hills of Mount Carmel, the city offers easy access to a range of nearby archaeological and biblical sites in northern Israel. Again, our trip will spend two full days here, allowing ample time to explore well-known destinations, such as the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth, the River Jordan, and the mountaintop city of Safed.

A taste of Cyprus and Turkey

Our next destination is, a vibrant city on the Southern coast of Cyprus. We recommend strolling the narrow streets to explore the quaint shops and tavernas where you’ll find delicious local seafood, handmade goods, and famous wines.

One of Limassol’s most well-known historical sites is Kolossi Castle, a Crusader stronghold in the Middle Ages. While there, take time to sample Commandaria wine, which was first produced in the 14th century by the castle’s knights. Then, in the heart of the old Turkish quarter, the minaret of Kebir Mosque is easy to spot. Also known as the Great Mosque, it was built in the 16th century and is still in use today.

Harbor in Alanya, Turkey

After an overnight sail, you’ll awake in beautiful Alanya, Turkey. Known for its beaches and outdoor experiences, you’ll have opportunities to enjoy scuba diving or a visit to the Manavgat waterfalls. The city also offers plenty of history. The Red Tower, considered the symbol of the city, offers a panoramic view from its top floor. Take a short walk to Tersane, a medieval shipyard used to build battleships.

Another Turkish seaside city awaits. Our itinerary includes a day in Antalya, which is renowned for its beauty and history. The sight-seeing possibilities are endless. Ride a cable car to the top of Tunek Tepe, a huge hill that offers magnificent views of the city and the Gulf of Antalya. Visit the archaeological sites of Perge or Termessos. Or take a sail along the Düden Waterfalls in a traditional wooden boat.

Relax on the way to Sicily, Naples, and Rome

Rome, Italy

At this point in our Trip of a Lifetime, it’s time for a little extra relaxation. And there’s no better way than spending a couple of days at sea as we sail our way to Italy and the final stops of our tour. The all-inclusive cruise aboard the Azamara Pursuit will leave you wanting for nothing – and once you discover its Sanctum Spa, you’ll feel relaxed from head to toe.

Catania, Sicily, is our next stop. Located in the toe of Italy’s boot, the city is home to medieval castles, Roman ruins, and Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano. While you’re there, we recommend indulging in the local signature dish, Pasta alla Norma, and the region’s delicious wines.

From Catania, we head to Naples, the always-vibrant city known as the City of Sun. Famous for the nearby ruins of Pompeii, the area is rich with history from past civilizations, ranging from archaeological sites like Herculaneum to castles such as Castel Nuovo and the Royal Palace of Naples. Plus, Naples is the birthplace of pizza, which the locals take very seriously. Look for pizza places certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, which means they use traditional Neapolitan ingredients and methods.

Finally, we’ll end our cruise and spend three days exploring Rome. Visits to the Coliseum, the Forum, Pantheon, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica always live up to – and exceed – expectations. You’ll also want to make time to walk the Spanish Steps, throw a coin into Trevi Fountain, and wander the narrow cobblestone streets of Trastevere.
